South Korean footballer Hwang Ui-jo has issued an apology for secretly recording intimate moments with his partners without their consent.

Prosecutors allege that the 31-year-old striker filmed these encounters with two women on four separate occasions between June and September 2022.

Appearing in a Seoul court for the first time on Wednesday, Hwang expressed regret, saying he was “deeply sorry” for causing “disappointment.”

The former Nottingham Forest player, who recently transferred to Turkey’s Alanyaspor, became embroiled in the scandal after his sister-in-law shared the videos on social media last June in a blackmail attempt.

She was sentenced to three years in prison in September following Hwang’s legal action against her.

Despite her conviction, charges against Hwang continued, as prosecutors maintained that the videos were filmed illegally.

They declined to disclose further information about the women involved to protect their privacy.

“I will not do anything wrong in the future and will do my best as a footballer,” Hwang told the court in Seoul.

“I sincerely apologise to the victims who have been affected by my actions, and I am deeply sorry for the disappointment I have caused to all those who have cared and supported me,” he added.
