Eko Hot Blog reports that Former Super Eagles midfielder, Waidi Akanni, had encouraged Lagos residents to rally behind Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s efforts to elevate sports and other sectors in the state.
After receiving commendation from the management of the Lagos State Health Services Commission for his altruistic contribution during the 2023 Inter-Hospital Sports Competition, Akanni, former Chairman of the Lagos State Football Association, emphasized the importance of supporting Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s vision for advancing sports and other sectors in the state.
The letter of appreciation, signed by Dr. Sojinrin M.O, the LOC Chairman of the HSC Inter-Hospital Competition, expressed gratitude to Akanni for his financial and moral backing, crucial to the success of the event.
In response to the letter, Akanni, CEO of Match International Limited, reaffirmed his dedication to enhancing society’s welfare.
“We need to support the government in its different programmes. We want to continue to support and align with the several life-changing programmes of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu,” he stated.
Akanni played for the Nigeria national under-20 football team that won the bronze medal at the 1985 FIFA World Youth Championship finals in the Soviet Union.
He would also play for the senior Nigeria national football team, appearing in a 1988 African Cup of Nations qualifying match against Sierra Leone, and a 1990 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Cameroon.
