One would expect that the security personnel putting their lives on the line for the collective protection of our dear country Nigeria would be accorded utmost importance when it comes to adequate infrastructural facilities such as accommodation for them and their families.
Well, the reverse was the case when you see pictures of the accommodations from one of the Nigerian Police barracks in Jos, the Plateau State capital.
The obvious state of dilapidated structures that served as accommodation to the men and women of the Police Force as well as their family members could but just makes one weep for the Nigerian Police Force while raising a number legitimate questions. The dilapidated state of the accommodation could not be compared to even a standard poultry farm.
One could only imagine what has happened to the budgetary allocations meant for the infrastructural development of barracks the force gets year-in-year-out.
The importance of providing good accommodation for the security personnel could not be over emphasized in relations to the performance of the security personnels. As a matter of fact, studies have shown over time that employee treatment has a direct link to either positively or negatively affect his/her performance.
How would do you expect a security personnel whose wellbeing is accorded no importance to give his/her best to the service? It’s just like sowing corn and want to harvest rice, it’s practically impossible for us to continue to pay little or no attention to the wellbeing of the people that put their lives on the line for our collective safety and expect their best.
It is a national embarrassment to the country and also to the Police Force for not to being able to provide at least a befitting accommodation for its personnel. Other than allowing its personnel live in an accommodation not even befitting for a standard poultry farm.
This piece is however not embarrassed the Police Force or the Federal Government rather, it is a wake up call to its responsibilities of ensuring that security personnel are well catered for, by declaring state emergency to address the infrastructural dilemma in police barracks across the country.
There is urgent need to address this dilemma before it gets out of hand. Instead of trying to hide it and act as if the leadership of the Police Force is never aware of the dilapidated state of accommodations in Police barracks across the country.
