Extend Deadline For Blocking SIMs Without NIN, Reps Tell NCC

The House of Representatives has asked the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to extend the 31st December deadline issued to network subscribers to submit their National Identification Numbers (NIN) to network providers to prevent blocking of the sim.

House Minority Leader, Ndudi Elumelu, who moved the motion during Wedenesday’s plenary, argued that two weeks is too short for 200million Nigerians to conclude the process, considering the difficulty experienced by Nigerians in getting the NIN.

The House lauds the intention of the NCC, for security reasons but wants the process to be extended to 10 weeks.

Eko Hot Blog reported that the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy issued an ultimatum to all telecommunications (telcos) operators in the country to block all Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs) without a valid National Identification Number (NIN) with effect from December 31st.

The government also directed that, after the deadline, a Ministerial Task Force comprising the minister and all the CEOs, among others, as members would monitor compliance by the service providers.
