The presidency defended the extension of the 2023 Supplementary Budget’s capital section, stating it is necessary to ensure the full implementation of projects hindered by funding issues.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the presidency on Friday defended the National Assembly’s decision to extend the lifespan of the capital section of the 2023 Supplementary Budget, emphasizing it aims to ensure full implementation of the budget.

In response to criticism from Nigerian civic platform BudgIT, which noted that this extension means three national budgets are now running concurrently, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, stated that the extension addresses funding issues hindering project execution.

Onanuga explained, “There’s really no issue here. The National Assembly has already explained its reason for this. There are many projects in the 2023 Budget and the Supplementary Budget that have not been executed. The idea is to achieve the implementation of such projects in the previous budgets.”

He highlighted that specific ministries, such as the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, have allocations in both the 2023 Budget and the Supplementary Budget that need to be executed for the overall benefit of the nation.

“…have not been given the cash backing to embark of the projects, automatically they have to take such projects forward to be implemented. Apparently, they weren’t able to implement it because they didn’t have the funds.
