The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), yesterday shut down operations at Gombe and Kebbi airports over N800 million debts.
The agency sent a NOTAM (Notice To Air Men) to the airports announcing its decision to withdraw men of the safety and fire rescue and aviation security personnel attached to the two airports.
Two weeks ago, FAAN warned that its services will be withdrawn if the two state governments failed to clear their debts. It also threatened to implement sanctions against state and privately-owned airports indebted to it.
It issued a seven-day notice of grace to the debtor airports after the earlier ultimatum, which expired last week.
FAAN also listed other debtors to include Bicourtney Aviation Services, Jigawa, Bauchi, Akwa Ibom, and Asaba airports as well as Bebi Airstrip.
