Fake LASTMA Officer Bags 2-year Jail Term

• Omotutu Bamidele has been sentenced to a 2-year jail term for impersonating a LASTMA officer and extorting money from unsuspecting road users in Lagos.

• The verdict was declared at a court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi on Monday.

• Bamidele was arrested by a LASTMA monitoring and surveillance team led by the Zonal Head, Ashafa Moyosore, on Olu Holloway Road, around the Alfred Rewane area of Ikoyi some days back.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that a fake Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) officer, Omotutu Bamidele, has been sentenced to a two-year jail term for impersonating and extorting money from motorists across Lagos.

The Lagos State Special Offences (Mobile) Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, handed down the verdict on Monday, March 27, 2023.

Bamidele was arraigned by LASTMA on a two-count charge of impersonating a public officer and obtaining money by fraudulent trick before the court.

He claimed to be a staff of LASTMA, which is a violation of Section 78 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015. The convict was arrested by a LASTMA monitoring and surveillance team led by the Zonal Head, Ashafa Moyosore, on Olu Holloway Road, around the Alfred Rewane area of Ikoyi a few days ago.

In a statement released by the Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, Magistrate Kehinde Ogundare sentenced Bamidele to a two-year jail term without any option of fine after he pleaded guilty to the charges levelled against him. Magistrate Ogundare emphasized that the convict should serve the jail term without any option of a fine due to the gravity of the offences committed.

The Court Prosecutor, Barrister Olufemi Adekunle, stated that both offences levied against the convict contravened the Criminal Law of Lagos State (2015).

In his reaction to the judgement, the General Manager of LASTMA, Bolaji Oreagba, said the verdict was a welcome development as it would serve as a deterrent to others who are still extorting money from innocent members of the public under false pretence.
