Nigeria’s Falconets Suffer 3-1 Defeat To Germany In U-20 Women’s World Cup

Nigeria’s Falconets fell 3-1 to Germany in their second Group D match at the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Colombia.

Germany maintained their perfect record against the Falconets at the U-20 World Cup, winning all five encounters between the teams. Alara Sehitler, Sofie Zdebel, and Sarah Ernst scored for Germany, while Chiamaka Okwuchukwu netted the lone goal for Nigeria.

Germany applied early pressure and nearly scored in the 10th minute, but Steiner missed the target. The Germans came close again in the 16th minute, but Falconets goalkeeper Shukurat Bakare made a crucial save.

The Falconets had a chance to equalize on a counterattack in the 22nd minute, but the German goalkeeper made a point-blank save. Germany had another opportunity to extend their lead in the 32nd minute, but Veit failed to convert.

Five minutes into the second half, Okwuchukwu capitalized on a strong start by the Falconets, leveling the score. However, just two minutes later, the Germans almost regained the lead, but Ohaegbulem made a timely clearance.

Germany took the lead again in the 62nd minute when Sofie Zdebel tapped home a cross from the right. The Falconets thought they had equalized shortly after, but Okwuchukwu’s effort was ruled offside.

In the 68th minute, Zdebel nearly extended Germany’s lead with a solo run, but Bakare rushed out to claim the ball. With 15 minutes remaining, a German player missed a golden opportunity, heading the ball over the bar.

Okwuchukwu had another chance in the 83rd minute, but her shot lacked the power to trouble the German goalkeeper. In the 89th minute, Jumoke Alani almost scored an own goal, but the ball landed on the roof of the net.

Germany sealed their victory in the 93rd minute when Sarah Ernst headed in a well-delivered cross.
