Becomes Nigeria’s second athletics world record holder
Nigerian sprint sensation, Favour Ofili, stunned the athletics world on Saturday evening after shattering the women’s 150m world record at the Adidas Atlanta City Games held at Piedmont Park.
Ofili blazed through the rarely contested straight-line distance in a phenomenal 15.85 seconds, smashing the previous world best of 16.23 seconds set by Olympic champion Shaunae Miller-Uibo in 2018. With this historic performance, she becomes the first woman ever to run the 150m under 16 seconds.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that an emotional Ofili, speaking after the race, struggled to find the right words to capture the moment. “I’m speechless. The Lord is good, and it’s marvellous in my sight,” she said, attributing her feat to divine grace and the tireless efforts of her coach.
“Honestly, it’s all God. I’m surprised by the time, yes, but I know I put in the work. I trust my coach, I trust his programme, and I knew that at the right time, the Lord would make it happen.”
Though the 150m is not a standard event at major championships, its growing popularity at street meets has made it a thrilling platform for sprinters. Ofili approached the race with a strategy grounded in simplicity and trust.
“I got some advice: treat it like it’s a long 100 metres. Drive more, and if the track is bouncy, just let the track do the work,” she said. “My coach always used to say, ‘Relax and sprint; that’s your favourite.’ That’s exactly what I did, and it worked.”
Ofili’s record-breaking run saw her outpace American sprint prodigy Tamari Davis, who finished second in 16.14 seconds—also faster than the previous world best.
Saturday’s achievement etched Ofili’s name in the history books as only the second Nigerian athlete to hold a world record in athletics, joining Tobi Amusan, the reigning 100m hurdles world champion.
Her stellar season continues to build momentum. At the Grand Slam Track Meet in Miami, Ofili clocked a wind-assisted 10.94 seconds in the 100m and followed with a 22.27 seconds finish in the 200m, placing just behind Olympic gold medallist Gabby Thomas and rising star Melissa Jefferson-Wooden.

Still riding high on her record-breaking performance, Ofili now sets her sights on a podium finish at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo. After placing sixth in the 200m final at the Paris 2024 Olympics, she is determined to turn near-misses into medals in the years ahead.
