The incident transpired on Friday afternoon while Alabi, recognized for his passionate advocacy on human rights and environmental concerns, was visiting the beach with companions.

Eyewitnesses report that Alabi was swimming when he appeared to struggle against a strong undercurrent suddenly. Despite immediate rescue efforts by bystanders and emergency services, Alabi was pronounced deceased at the scene.
