During his speech, Minister Wike provided key details about the project’s background. He explained that the contract for the rehabilitation of Phase 2 was initially awarded to Messrs SCC Nigeria Limited in September 2022, under the administration of the late President Muhammadu Buhari, at a cost of over N50 billion.

He emphasized that even though the project was started by the previous government, the current administration, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has demonstrated a firm commitment to its completion.
According to the Minister, this effort aligns perfectly with the “Renewed Hope Agenda,” which views water as a fundamental necessity and a crucial service that the government must provide to its citizens.
He stated that the successful completion of the plant’s rehabilitation is a major step toward enhancing the city’s infrastructure. The project will substantially increase the plant’s overall capacity, which will directly translate to a more reliable and improved water supply for all residents of the FCT.
