Eko Hot Blog reports that The Department of Development Control within the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has taken a proactive step by forming a seven-member committee to prevent building collapses in the federal capital, Abuja.
Mr. Mukhtar Galadima, the director of the department, explained during the committee’s inauguration in Abuja that this initiative is part of a preventive approach to address the recurring issue of building collapses in the city.
Galadima emphasized the importance of not waiting for more building collapses before taking action. He stated, “That is why we set up the committee to help investigate structures that are not structurally stable for human habitation. It is good to go round and identify these structures, conduct integrity tests, and, where necessary, provide remedial measures or remove the structure if it is found to be unstable.”
The committee’s primary responsibility is to identify structures that may appear stable visually but could pose risks. It will recommend integrity tests and take necessary actions to ensure the safety of these buildings. Additionally, the committee will provide recommendations to minimize the occurrence of building collapses in the FCT.
