EKO HOT BLOG The Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, representing the Federal Government, has affirmed its commitment to conducting a thorough forensic investigation into the explosion that occurred in the Adeyi area of Old Bodija, Ibadan, last week. The blast resulted in the tragic loss of five lives, injuries to 77 residents, and destruction of approximately 58 houses.
Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State disclosed that preliminary investigations indicated the explosion was caused by explosives stored in a house by illegal miners. In response, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, through his Special Assistant on Media, Segun Tomori, emphasized the government’s determination to uncover the true cause of the explosion before deciding on the next course of action.
“The Federal Government is now waiting for the outcome of forensic investigations that will determine the real cause of the blast, the explosives type that triggered it, and the circumstances leading to the unfortunate incident that led to the loss of lives and property,” stated the minister’s spokesperson.
Mine Inspectorate officers from the ministry have been deployed to the explosion site to collaborate with other security agencies in the investigative process. The minister urged patience, emphasizing the importance of allowing security agencies to carry out their duties without undue speculation.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South-West region praised Governor Makinde for his prompt response to the Ibadan incident. The party sees the explosion as a wake-up call for citizens to enhance their security awareness. The PDP South-West Zonal Publicity Secretary, Sanya Atofarati, expressed confidence in the governor’s capacity and the security authorities to conduct a comprehensive investigation that brings the perpetrators to justice and prevents a recurrence.
“While we identify and sympathize with the victims at this critical moment of their lives, and pray for the repose of the lost souls, we also hope the public would see the incident as an eye-opener to be more security conscious and report any activity that is capable of causing a security breach,” stated Atofarati.
The Federal Government anticipates that the findings from the forensic investigation will shed light on the circumstances surrounding the Ibadan explosion, enabling appropriate actions to be taken to avoid similar incidents in the future.
