Fela, Wizkid, Adekunle Gold, 2Baba, Davido and Falz are nominated for Most Popular Male Musician at this year’s edition of NET Honours, EKO HOT BLOG gathered.
Nearly 24 years after his death, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti still features prominently in music conversations. In October 2020, Felabration was held as a fully virtual event for the first time. In February 2021, he was nominated for induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
Wizkid was determined to please his fans during the year in review, releasing his long-awaited ‘Made In Lagos’ in October 2020. He also dropped the hit singles – “Smile”, “No Stress” (which currently has 11 million views on YouTube) and “Ginger” (which has 17 million views on YouTube).

At the 2021 Headies, Wizkid won the awards for Headies’ Viewer’s Choice, Song Of The Year (for “Joro”), and Artiste of the Year. On March 14, 2021, the 30-year-old won the Grammy for Best Music Video for his contribution to Beyonce’s hit single “Brown Skin Girl.”
In August 2020, Adekunle Gold released his third studio album, Afro Pop Vol. 1, which has been streamed more than 63 million times on Audiomack. In addition, his hit single “Okay”, released in November 2020, has garnered 6.7 million views on YouTube. His most recent track, released on April 30, 2021, has more than 4 million plays on Audiomack and 2 million views on YouTube.
2baba collaborated with Wizkid on the hit single “Opo”, released in August 2020, which has received 4.5 million streams on YouTube. In November 2020, he released “Target You”, a song featuring Syemca, which has been streamed on YouTube a million times.
Davido’s third studio album, A Better Time, which premiered on November 12, 2020, has been streamed 54.7 million times on Apple Music and 11.5 million times on Spotify. His single, “FEM”, was one of the biggest hits of 2020 with more than 23 million views on YouTube and was the unofficial theme song of the #EndSARS protests. In addition, his 2018 hit single, “Assurance”, was featured on the soundtrack of the movie Coming 2 America, and the 28-year-old also made a cameo appearance in the film.
Falz participated actively in last year’s #EndSARS protests and ultimately got interviewed by CNN’s Christiane Amanpour. He played the lead role in the comedy film Quam’s Money, which premiered in December 2020. His hit single, “Bop Daddy” (featuring Ms Banks), was nominated for Best Rap Single at the 2021 Headies.
