Femi Okunnu Eulogises Justice Oluwa, Urges Younger Judges to Emulate Him

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Okunnu has described the late Lagos High Court Judge, Justice Isiaka Oluwa, as an upright man urging judges in service to pattern after the retired judge.

Speaking to newsmen on Thursday at his Lagos residence, Okunnu expressed his disappointment in the nation’s justice system saying that Oluwa was the last of high standard judges in the nation.

The former Federal Commissioner for Works during the military government of General Yakubu Gowon also added that the late judge, who died at age 102, was an uncle figure for him till death and an inspiration for him and some other judges in the nation.

He further said that Oluwa’s death was a big blow to the judicial system and Nigeria as a whole. He characterised the late Oluwa as a fearless judge.

According to him: “As a high court judge, when we talk of a judge being upright, it doesn’t apply to many of the young judges now in Nigeria. But it was very much applicable to Justice Isiaka Oluwa. He was an upright judge.

“If you come late to his court by one minute than the fixed time, you are out. At exactly 9 am, Oluwa will be seated inside the court to dispense justice.

“When he was the pro-chancellor, LASU was the best in criminal law in Nigeria. The school was number one.”

On coronavirus, Okunnu charged all Nigerians to follow the directives of the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control stating that the virus is a deadly one that shouldn’t be taken with levity.

Quoting him: “For your own sake, I pray and beg you, observe the rules, keep a social distance. You don’t know who by accident or whatever carries the virus. Keep social distancing, wear the masks to cover your nose,

“It’s a very dangerous thing. See how it has restricted our movement. It has turned the economy upside down. It is arguably the most virulent virus in modern times, he concluded.
