By Babawale Solomon
Eko Hot Blog reports that author and consulting psychiatrist, Dr. Femi Olugbile, on Wednesday, showcased his literary masterpiece, ‘Pelewura’.
The book was launched at NIIA, Victoria Island, Lagos, to positive acclaim.
Esteemed dignitaries, including former IGP Baba Musiliu Smith, Mr. Fola Adeola, Dr. Abayomi Fini, former Lagos State Governor Raji Fashola (represented by Mr. Hakeem Bello), Oniru of Iru land, HRM Oba Abdulwasiu Omogbolahan Lawal, Mrs. Stella Okoli, and Justice Mrs. Rose Vivour, graced the event with their presence.
During the launch, Dr. Olugbile provided insights into the character of ‘Pelewura’ and her connection to influential women in his life.
Describing Pelewura’s character, he highlighted her vim, despite being an illiterate, gaining knowledge through the newspapers of her friend, Herbert Macaulay.
He revealed the achievements of the Lagos Market Women Association, pioneered by Pelewura, emphasizing the strength of women in society.
Notably, Pelewura led brave and courageous women like her in protests against oppressive policies of the colonial regime.
Celebrating women’s contributions, Dr. Olugbile encouraged the export of culture and urged the youth to acquire a copy of the book (hard or soft copy) for a profound self-discovery.
In an interview with journalists, Dr. Olugbile conveyed the literature’s message, underscoring the significance of women in society.
“Women are important members of society. In my historical research, I found inspiration in my powerful mother and Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji,” he said.
“Pelewura, a true historical figure, shared commonalities with these characters. Her experiences were emblematic of Nigeria’s development and could be transformational for the present generation.
“Strength, beauty, elegance, a redefinition of femininity – these qualities belong to us. I want children to understand their history and possibilities, uncovering strengths present in both past and present generations. Reading this literature can help them see themselves in its characters and aspire to be the best.”
Dr. Olugbile emphasized that he wasn’t condemning anything; instead, he encourages individuals to uncover their inherent strengths for personal growth.
