FG Advocates Strict Regulation of Tobacco Industry

Eko Hot Blog reports the Nigerian Federal Government emphasizes the need for strict regulation in the tobacco industry, aligning with the country’s legislation and global best practices.
Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Ali Pate, highlighted the economic and health costs associated with tobacco use. He noted that for every $1 gained from tobacco, $3 was expended on healthcare costs due to its adverse effects.
Pate commended the FCCPC’s legal actions and sanctions against British American Tobacco Nigeria (BATN) for anti-tobacco control and anti-competition practices. These measures align with global standards, emphasizing the need for legislative action against the tobacco industry’s liabilities.
Transitioning to the FCCPC’s advocacy campaign, titled ‘Don’t burn their future,’ it addresses various segments of society. It focuses on primary tobacco smokers, engaging retailers as gatekeepers for tobacco access.
Moving forward, Adamu Abdullahi, Acting Executive Vice Chairman/CEO of FCCPC, emphasized the significance of robust policies to deter youth initiation and promote quitting among current users.
To expand on the campaign’s impact, the initiative goes beyond warnings, providing counseling services, assistance for individuals aiming to quit smoking, toll-free lines, and collaboration with Civil Society Organizations to support a smoke-free future.
This comprehensive initiative aligns with global efforts to combat tobacco-related health issues, marking a step forward in Nigeria’s commitment to tobacco control and public health.
