EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Nigerian Federal Government has condemned the Polish authorities for detaining Nigerians and other African students fleeing war-torn Ukraine during the Russian invasion because of their dark skin.

Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), voiced her displeasure with the occurrence, calling it “wrong and distressing.”

On Thursday, Dabiri-Erewa spoke at the start of a two-day Psychosocial Trauma Clinic for Ukraine returnees.

She said that some Nigerian students who had escaped the war-torn Ukraine to Poland and Hungary were now being held in Poland, a development she said was unacceptable to the Federal Government.

She praised President Muhammadu Buhari of Nigeria for allowing the trapped students to return home.

“Imagine we are unable to return them to their homeland; have a look at what is occurring in Poland.”

“After some Africans and Nigerians refused to return home, the Polish authorities have begun rounding up black people and placing them in detention facilities.

“Those Nigerians who refused to return are in danger; some are being held in Polish detention centers and are in a terrible situation.”

“However, just because Nigeria offered them the chance to return home and they declined, does not imply the Polish authorities will seize them and detain them.”

The US government is now pleading with Poland’s authorities to liberate the blacks who are being held there.

“It is not acceptable for them to arrest black people because they choose to seek refuge in their own nation” (Poland).

“They are not placing whites in those detention centers, so instead of capturing them in detention centers, which is the height of prejudice in a war situation, send them back to their countries.” Dabiri-Erewa said as quoted by NAN.
