FG Drags Farmers To Court Over Non Refund Of N17bn Loan

Some farmers in Kebbi State have been taken to court over non-payment of the loan they took to aide their farming work.

It could be recalled that in 2015, the Federal Government of Nigeria under the leadership of President Muhammed Buhari, in conjunction with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), introduced a programme called Anchor Borrower Programme, to support farmers in their farm production.

Reports reaching Ekohotblog at this time reveals that about 70,000 farmers from Kebbi state, the Northern part of Nigeria, who have benefited from the programme had refused to refund the money given to them after meeting their needs.

This media platform is aware that the programme is meant to give loans to the farmers to support their farming business and help them enlarge their coast, and thereafter payback at agreed terms. But it was reported that the some of the farmers have refused to pay back over the sum N17billion loan they collected under the Anchor Borrower Programme.

However, reports had it that the farmers have been dragged to court by the Federal Government for failure to repay the collected money.

This was disclosed by the chairman of Kebbi State chapter of Rice Farmer Association of Nigeria, RIFAN, Muhammed Sahabi Augie, in an interview with newsmen, two days ago.

He noted that out of the 70,000 farmers that benefitted from the loans in 2015, only about 200 of them repaid the loans they took.
