FG Insists On Closure of Schools Until Safety Is Assured

The Federal Government of Nigeria has reiterated that schools across the country would remain closed until safety is guaranteed.

The Minister of State for Education, Mr. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, disclosed this on Wednesday, July 15th, 2020, while addressing Journalists at the end of the eight virtual federal executive council meeting.

He emphasized that despite the demand by parents and the National Assembly on school resumption to allow SSS 3 students to sit for the 2020 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE),  schools will remain closed.

The onus is on the government to ensure adequate measures are in place that would ascertain the safety of the students before reopening schools across the country.

He maintained that stakeholders would be having a series of meetings to ensure that the right decision is made.

He added that the West African Examination Council is also considering a change of date for 2020 WASSCE.

He also contended that it had started the negotiations with other West African countries to look at a possible shift in date to accommodate our students when the schools eventually reopen.

It would be recalled that the West African Examination Council had earlier scheduled that the West African Senior School Certificate Examination will commence on 3 August and last till 5 September.

However, with the new decision taken by the Nigerian government, the Examination body would be compelled to rescind its earlier decision of commencing the Examination in August as that would grossly affect Nigeria, which one of its major stakeholders.
