FG, Organised Labour Make New Conflicting Minimum Wage Proposals
Eko Hot Blog reports that federal government has increased its offer for the new minimum wage for workers from N60,000 to N62,000.
The figure was reportedly arrived at on Friday during a meeting between federal government representatives and labour leaders called to deliberate on the new minimum wage.
The organised labour, on the other hand, has proposed a N250,000 minimum wage.
During a Tuesday meeting aimed at convincing organised labour to suspend its nationwide strike, the federal government said President Bola Tinubu was willing to go beyond the initial N60,000 proposed as minimum wage.
Although the latest proposal went beyond N60,000 by N2,000, it is well below workers’ new proposal of N250,000.
The latest development comes a day after the Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, submitted the cost implication of minimum wage to President Tinubu.

The president had earlier directed Edun to present the cost implications for a new minimum wage within two days.
He gave the order at a meeting with the government negotiation team led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Edun’s proposal to the president has not been made public.
Recall that organised labour, comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress, had embarked on a nationwide strike on Monday to demand an increased minimum wage for workers and the reversal of the recently increased electricity tariffs.
However, the labour union leadership suspended the strike on Tuesday for five days after signing a commitment with the federal government to resume negotiations and come up with a new minimum wage within a week.
It is unclear whether labour will accept the government’s latest proposal, restart the five-day pause of its indefinite strike, or resume negotiations.
Earlier on Friday, the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) said any minimum wage above N60,000 will not be sustainable.
