Eko Hot Blog Federal Government has secured a $163 million loan from the African Development Bank (AfDB) to boost wheat production in Kebbi and Jigawa states.
Vice President Kashim Shettima disclosed this on Monday when he paid a condolence visit to the family of the late Sheikh Abubakar Giro in Argungu, Kebbi State.
Shettima said the loan would be used to develop 60,000 hectares of arable land in the two states. He said 10,000 hectares of land would be developed in Kebbi State, while 50,000 hectares would be developed in Jigawa State.
The Vice President said the project would create jobs and boost food security in the country. He also said it would help to reduce the country’s reliance on imported wheat.
Shettima was accompanied on the visit by the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, and other top government officials.
The loan from the AfDB is a major boost for the government’s efforts to boost wheat production in Nigeria. The country currently imports about 80% of its wheat needs, and the government has been looking for ways to reduce this dependence on imports.
