The Federal Government (FG) and the security agencies in the country have remained silent on the arrest and detention of the Yoruba Nation agitator, Sunday Adeyemo fondly known as Sunday Igboho, who was arrested on Monday night in Cotonou, Benin Republic.
EKO HOT BLOG had in the early hours of Tuesday reported that Sunday Igboho was arrested at an airport in Cotonou on Monday night while attempting to flee to Germany.
It was also reported on Tuesday that the arrested Yoruba activist would be extradited to Nigeria on Tuesday, yet neither the Federal Government nor any of its agencies have reacted to the development or otherwise as of the time of filing this report on Wednesday morning.
Several attempts to speak with the spokesperson of the Department of State Services (DSS), Dr. Peter Afunanya, proved abortive as all his calls remained unanswered on Tuesday.
Also, several calls put across to the Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, a Commissioner of Police, on Tuesday, were unanswered.
However, a senior police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that “efforts are being put in place to iron out certain grey areas on the extradition of Chief Adeyemo to avoid diplomatic crisis between the two countries”.
According to Sunday Igboho’s lawyer, Yomi Alliyu (SAN), the popular Yoruba Nation agitator, and his wife, Ropo, were arrested by the International Criminal Police Organisation (INTERPOL) in Cotonou, Benin Republic.

It was, however, gathered that all frantic efforts already being made to extradite Sunday Igboho back to Nigeria to face the law “are being blocked” by some interested groups within and outside the country.
EKO HOT BLOG further gathered that a powerful group in Nigeria had dispatched a legal team to the Republic of Benin to thwart the extraction.
EKO HOT BLOG recalls that the Department of State Services (DSS) had declared Sunday Igboho wanted for allegedly stockpiling arms, an allegation he has since denied.
The DSS had raided Igboho’s Ibadan residence in the Soka area on July 1, 2021, arrested about 12 of his aides, and killed two of them in a gun battle.
The Federal Government of Nigeria later placed the Nigeria Immigration Service and the Nigeria Customs Service on alert to stop the Yoruba Nation agitator from leaving the country.
