Eko Hot Blog reports that in a significant move to streamline airport operations and enhance passenger experience, the Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Federal Government on Friday tested the newly installed electronic gates (e-gates) at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
The trial run was overseen by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, accompanied by top government officials, including the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry and the Comptroller-General of Immigration.
According to Tunji-Ojo, the e-gates are being deployed to eliminate human interfaces, reduce bureaucracy, and make the movement of passengers in and out of the country seamless. The minister revealed that the project is 99 percent complete, with plans to commence full operations by next week.
During the test, the Airport infrastructure and Command and Control Centers were evaluated, and the e-gates successfully rejected fake and expired passports while clearing genuine ones. Tunji-Ojo expressed confidence in the system’s ability to enhance security measures and prevent unwanted individuals from entering the country.
“With this massive infrastructure, we believe that no unwanted persons or persons of interests can find their way into Nigeria. Our security through the Airports and in the Airport domains are guaranteed,” he stated.
The minister commended the initiative as a testament to President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to change narratives and make passenger movements in and out of the country seamless. He also acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the Nigeria Customs Service, and other stakeholders in making the transformation possible.
In addition to the Abuja Airport, the Federal Government plans to deploy 29 e-gates in Lagos, four in Enugu and Kano, and five in Port-Harcourt, further streamlining airport operations across the country.
