EKO HOT BLOG reports that this was disclosed by the Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Professor Idris Bugaje, during an interview with journalists in Abuja. He said the move is part of a broader plan to rejuvenate technical and vocational education under the Tinubu-led administration.
According to Bugaje, the government has allocated ₦120 billion to fund the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) programme, which will be implemented through the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND). The objective, he explained, is to stimulate interest in technical education and equip youths with employable skills.
Bugaje expressed concern over the steady decline in interest in vocational and technical studies since the 1980s, citing a sharp drop in the number of technical colleges in the country — now at 129 — compared to over 15,000 senior secondary schools.
“With this grant, young people will find it more attractive to enroll in technical colleges, gain skills, and secure jobs both within Nigeria and internationally,” he said.
He emphasized that the ₦45,000 payment is a grant, not a loan, and beneficiaries are not expected to repay it.
“The sector is experiencing a rebirth. We are seeing what could be called a resurrection of TVET, reminiscent of the attention it received during the colonial and early independence periods,” he added.

The NBTE boss stressed that the initiative aims to reposition the sector, create employment opportunities, and build a skilled workforce that can compete globally.
