FG to Revamp Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway with Modern Features
FG Plans Enhancements for Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway
The Federal Government has announced plans to revise the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project to include features that will boost its economic and social impact.
Minister of Works, David Umahi, shared this during an inspection of Sections I and II of the project in Lagos, managed by Hitech Construction Company Ltd. He outlined plans to incorporate modern features like tree planting, CCTV surveillance, and lay-bys for safety and security.
“We will have CCTV cameras powered by solar along the entire 750-kilometre stretch to Calabar,” Umahi said. “Every few kilometres, we’ll set up lay-bys with security posts and viewing centres to ensure quick response to emergencies.”
He added that the initial project plan did not include service lanes, CCTV cameras, or provisions for topsoil and debris removal. These updates are being introduced to align the project with modern infrastructure standards.
The minister praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to infrastructure development, noting that the project is part of four major “Renewed Hope” legacy projects aimed at improving transportation across Nigeria. He highlighted efforts to balance development among the six geopolitical zones by adopting milestone-based execution.
Umahi stated that parts of the Lagos-Calabar Highway and other ongoing projects, including the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, are expected to be ready for commissioning by May 2025. “We are confident that we’ll complete sections of these projects for commissioning by May 29,” he said.
Progress and Challenges
Work is advancing on the Sokoto and Kebbi sections of the Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway, with a focus on concrete construction. Similarly, the Lagos-Calabar Highway’s first sections in the South-West are on track for partial completion.
Umahi also announced that construction of a train track along the Lagos-Calabar route will begin in 2025, further enhancing connectivity in the region.
Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, Federal Controller of Works, acknowledged early challenges in the project but expressed optimism about timely delivery, citing the contractor’s efforts.
The minister emphasized the government’s prioritization of road infrastructure, stating that these projects are part of a broader plan to address Nigeria’s transportation needs.
