The Chairpersons of the six Area Councils in FCT were urged to constitute a Surveillance Committee in their respective councils to curb insecurity.
Wike advised the six during a meeting held in Abuja on Thursday to tackle the issues affecting the areas.
The Minister said the surveillance committee would help in checking insecurity and activities of illegal mining in communities, which creates an avenue for insecurity.
Parts of the issues outlined at the meeting were: inadequate funds, sanitation, public transportation, land allocation and insecurity by the Chairperson of Kwali Area Council, Danladi Chiya. Kidnapping was also outlined as the major challenge affecting the area.
Mr Chiya said that about 19 persons were kidnapped in Bwari Area Council on Thursday, September 7, (Thursday) and urged the minister to come to their aid.
Land allocation issues was equally outlined by the chairperson, who said that peoples’ backyards, graveyards, and churches were being allocated to individuals.
On the other hand, the Chairperson of the Bwari Area Council, John Gabaya, implored Wike to carry the council chairpersons along in land allocation and development to enable them to monitor the allocated land development process.
Meanwhile, his counterpart, the Chairperson of Kuje Area Council, Abdullahi Sabo, lamented the menace of illegal miners in the area councils, stressing that they were constituting a security threat and unavoidable disaster.
Sabo reiterated that a landslide which took place in one of the mining sites took the lives of about 30 persons. He added that the miners were discovered to be operating illegally as they had no licence to mine on the land.
Wike said his ministry would address the issue by involving the Director of Department of State Services and Commissioner of Police, FCT Command in an emergency meeting
“We cannot achieve anything without the support of the area council chairmen, it is not possible. We must collaborate and work together for the interest of our people,” he said.

He, further, said that “we are not everywhere, how many times do we go out? By the time you know people have developed, then you will go and demolish, and it will cause problems.”
Addressing the issue of illegal mining, Wike assured the chairpersons that he would discuss with the Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake, to eliminate illegal mining in the FCT.
