The Federal Government has successfully resolved the crude oil supply issues facing the Dangote Refinery.
Eko Hot Blog reports that Aliko Dangote, the chairman of Dangote Group, made this announcement during a guided tour of the refinery located in the Lekki Free Trade Zone, Lagos, on Sunday.
Speaking to journalists, Dangote expressed gratitude to the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and the federal government for their intervention, which was crucial in overcoming the supply challenge.
The resolution of these supply issues is timely, as the refinery announced plans to roll out petrol in August. According to Dangote, the original plan to supply petrol in July was delayed due to difficulties in sourcing crude oil.
This development is expected to make petrol more available, especially at a time when Nigerians are experiencing a renewed fuel scarcity and price hike.
Recall that Dangote Industries Limited (DIL) recently raised an alarm over attempts by international oil companies (IOCs) to frustrate efforts at purchasing crude for the refinery.
The Vice President of Oil and Gas at DIL, Devakumar Edwin, “While the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC)are trying their best to allocate the crude for us, the IOCs are deliberately and willfully frustrating our efforts to buy the local crude.
“It seems that the objective is to ensure that our Petroleum Refinery fails. It is either they are deliberately asking for ridiculous/humongous premium or, they simply state that crude is not available.
“At some point, we paid $6 over and above the market price. This has forced us to reduce our output as well as import crude from countries as far as the US, increasing our cost of production.”
Beyond resolving the crude supply issues, Dangote also told journalists that the refinery’s fertiliser unit would resume production in two weeks, giving farmers more access to fertiliser for their farm products.
Dangote added that there was a massive request for fertiliser from Nigerians and the rest of Africa, so his group had no choice but to respond positively.
