FIFA cancelled the 2021 U-17 and U-20 World Cup as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the federation said in a statement on Thursday.
EKO HOT BLOG had earlier reported that the U-17 World Cup was originally scheduled for Peru and the U-20 World Cup in Indonesia, with the announcement of FIFA that the two countries will now host each other’s tournaments in 2023.

“The COVID-19 pandemic continues to pose challenges to the organization of international sporting events and has a restrictive impact on international travel,” FIFA said in its press release on Thursday. “FIFA therefore held regular consultations with relevant stakeholders, including host member associations together with the confederations involved in the two tournaments originally scheduled for 2021.
“As a result, it became apparent that the global situation was not sufficiently standardized to meet the challenges to host both tournaments, including the feasibility of relevant qualifying routes.”
The USA’s U-20 reached the quarter-finals in each of the last three U-20 World Cups, while the U-17 reached the quarter-finals in 2017.
