Eko Hot Blog reports that police detained Daniel Ojukwu, an FIJ journalist, in Lagos. His disappearance on May 1 prompted safety worries.
FIJ reported Ojukwu as missing after he became unreachable. A private investigator traced his likely detention location to Isheri Olofin.
Ojukwu’s family discovered authorities held him at SCID, Panti, on cybercrime charges. However, police restricted lawyer access, citing jurisdictional reasons.
“Authorities restrict our access to the IPO and legal counsel,” relatives stated. Officials may transfer the case to Abuja, further limiting legal options.
Ironically, the news of the detention surfaced on World Press Freedom Day.
Last year, police arrested Ojukwu on the same day for intervening in an incident.
Moreover, officials had scrutinized FIJ over investigative stories on financial irregularities.
In March, they interrogated FIJ’s chairman about published reports.
“We offered to provide clarifications if required,” FIJ said. However, no formal communication or summons arrived.
