Eko Hot Blog reports that a human rights lawyer sounds the alarm over the illegal detention of Daniel Ojukwu, a journalist with The Foundation of Investigative Journalism (FIJ).
Ridwan Oke, the lawyer, states that authorities are denying Ojukwu necessary medical care despite his health conditions.
Oke visited Ojukwu at the state criminal investigation department (CID) in Panti this Saturday. However, police officers refused to show any remand warrant authorizing Ojukwu’s detention. They also failed to disclose who filed a complaint against the journalist.
Shockingly, Ojukwu’s family and FIJ remained unaware of his whereabouts for 48 hours after his abduction on May 1st by police operatives in Lagos.
The authorities have kept the journalist incommunicado by seizing his mobile devices.
According to Oke, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) National Cybercrime Centre in Abuja claims jurisdiction over the case. However, they have not officially informed Ojukwu of any charges, suggesting any alleged offense is bailable under the law.
“The unit says it’s the NPF National Cybercrime Centre handling this, which means the offense is bailable,” Oke stated. “But they have not offered him bail or taken him to court as required.”
The lawyer emphasized grave concern over the lack of responsibility and accountability demonstrated by the authorities. “No one is taking responsibility. The Panti officers say they can’t help since it’s not their case.”
Oke firmly declared, “If anything happens to him, the Nigerian Police Force should be held accountable.” He demanded Ojukwu’s immediate release, citing the apparent violations of due process and citizen’s rights.
“Daniel has certain health conditions requiring medical attention that he has been denied access to,” the lawyer added gravely. “You must free him now before this becomes a health crisis.”
