Nigerian music sensation Tiwa Savage has opened up about her divorce from her ex-husband, Tunji Balogun, popularly known as TeeBillz. Speaking during an interview on The Receipts Podcast, the renowned singer revealed that the divorce was not initiated by her, contrary to public perception.

TeeBillz publicly announced their separation in 2018 via social media. However, Tiwa disclosed that the announcement came at a challenging time in her life, as she was struggling with postpartum depression following the birth of their son.

“The way our situation happened, he announced it online. I did not break up with him, but I was the one being attacked,” Tiwa explained.

She recounted how she was already dealing with the emotional and physical toll of childbirth when the unexpected announcement further complicated her struggles.

“My baby was just a few months old at that time. My body wasn’t the same because I was dealing with postpartum depression. Only a few people came to see me. Everyone went to him,” she said.

The singer revealed that the situation worsened after she decided to share her side of the story in an interview. “It got worse after I did an interview to tell my side of the story. People were like, ‘How dare you go and talk? You are a woman, and you are supposed to build the house. It’s your fault.’”

Tiwa admitted that the public backlash was deeply hurtful, as many people blamed her for the marriage’s collapse. “It was very heartbreaking how the public blamed me. Ever since then, I was like, ‘I won’t ever talk about the situation.’”

The aftermath of the divorce became a transformative period for Tiwa. She described how the experience left her depressed and angry for a long time, eventually leading her to redefine herself.

“It was an eye-opener for me. Then I became the ‘African Bad Girl.’ I started getting tattoos and wearing bikinis and short skirts,” she said, highlighting how she embraced a bold and unapologetic persona in response to her struggles.
