Fire Engulfs Sokoto Kara Market, Emergency Services Deployed

A massive fire broke out early Saturday at the Sokoto Kara Market, known for grains, essential commodities, and timber products. The blaze started at around 12:30 a.m in the morning. Firefighters have been battling to contain its spread to nearby residential areas.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, but the Sokoto State government has mobilized emergency services to manage the situation and prevent loss of lives. So far, no casualties have been reported.

Sokoto markets have suffered repeated fire outbreaks over the years, with devastating effects. Major markets such as the Sokoto Central Market, Old Market, and Gawon Nama Market have all experienced one or more fires since 2007, resulting in the destruction of goods worth millions of naira.
The Sokoto Central Market, the largest in the northwest region with over 5,000 shops, remains under reconstruction after a 2021 fire destroyed more than two-thirds of its structures.
Successive administrations, including those of former governors Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa, Aliyu Magatakarda Wamakko, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, and current Governor Ahmed Aliyu, have faced the challenge of rebuilding markets and assisting victims of these recurring disasters.
