Fire Guts Abuja Market, Destroys Properties
A late-night fire has ravaged a section of Kaura Modern Market in Abuja, located near the Prince and Princess market in the Kaura District.
The blaze, which erupted around 11 pm on Friday, destroyed approximately 40 shops, wiping out a variety of goods including foodstuffs, household items, and appliances.
Amiola Adebayo, the Acting Director of the FCT Fire Service, confirmed the incident on Saturday, attributing the cause to an electrical spark in a power change-over installed in one of the shops.
The fire intensified due to a generator that was stored in the same shop.

The incident was reported at 11:11 pm, and firefighting teams from the FCT and Federal Fire Service managed to bring the situation under control by 1:59 am.
Adebayo’s report detailed the extent of the damage: “Property involved; Open Market block that comprises 39 shops of foodstuffs. Items lost: foodstuffs, generators, refrigerators, fruits, umbrellas, electrical appliances, household items, and some parts of the roof.”
Adebayo did not mention if there were any injuries or fatalities resulting from the fire.
Addressing complaints that the Fire Service arrived late, Adebayo pointed to network issues as the primary cause of the delay.
He stated, “The only challenge we had was network. They couldn’t reach us on time. I was there myself. When they called, I had to mobilize the Games Village service, and in about 10-12 minutes they were there. But you know to a person at the scene, one minute would have felt like a long time. And then the Asokoro unit joined about 15 minutes after.”
