First-Ever Lagos Boxing Club Championship to Kick Off October 21
The Lagos State Government, through the Lagos State Sports Commission, is set to host its first-ever Individual Boxing Club Championship from October 21 to 27 at Bishop Aggey Senior Secondary School in Mushin, Lagos.
This seven-day event aims to discover new talents, encourage wide participation from boxing clubs, and promote inclusivity. It will also serve as a platform for boxers to fine-tune their skills ahead of national championships.
Boxers from registered clubs across the state will compete in 13 male and 12 female weight categories. The male divisions range from 48 kg to 92+ kg, while the female divisions span from 48 kg to 81+ kg. Each coach can enter one boxer per weight class.
The tournament is designed to boost club participation and empower young people, supporting grassroots sports development in Lagos.
Lekan Fatodu, Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, highlighted that the championship reflects the commission’s dedication to grassroots sports development.
“This championship is a result of our persistent efforts to drive sports development at the grassroots level,” Fatodu stated.
The tournament will follow a knockout format, with losing boxers eliminated, while winners advance under the supervision of state referees and judges to ensure fair competition.
Mushin was chosen for the inaugural edition due to its large number of boxers, but future tournaments will rotate across all five divisions of Lagos State, with Ajegunle selected as the next host.
The Lagos State Sports Commission sees this initiative as part of its broader strategy to promote physical activity, nurture youth development, and bring competitive sports to local communities.
