First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on political officeholders across Nigeria to actively implement gender equity initiatives.
Eko Hot Blog reports the First Lady lauded the House of Representatives for progressing a bill that reserves 70 out of 360 legislative seats for women, a significant step toward gender parity.
Speaking at the ECOWAS Female Parliamentarians Association’s spotlight initiative in the Senate’s alternate chamber in Abuja, Tinubu emphasized the urgent need to address ongoing gender disparities in politics.
“To fully achieve this across the board, we must be seen to walk the talk,” she asserted.
Tinubu highlighted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) has made nomination forms for elective positions free at the grassroots level, removing financial barriers for capable and qualified women.

After years of advocacy yielding limited results, Tinubu suggested that legally backed enforcement might be necessary to effect real change.
She stated, “While quotas and education are essential, enforcement of these measures is equally critical. Governments must put in place robust mechanisms to ensure compliance with gender quotas, including legal frameworks and monitoring systems that hold political parties accountable.”
Tinubu proposed constitutional amendments to solidify gender equity in political representation. “Such amendments would provide a solid legal foundation for women’s adequate representation, ensuring that gender equity is not just a policy preference but a constitutional mandate,” she explained.
She expressed optimism that achieving 30% women representation in parliament is possible, urging the 10th National Assembly to support this initiative. “Nigerian women are smart and intelligent and can work alongside our male counterparts, without friction for the good and development of our country,” Tinubu concluded.
