Five Men in Court for Falsely Accusing Lagos King

On Monday, the police brought five men before the Lagos State High Court in Tafa Balewa Square, charging them with making false criminal allegations against Oba Saheed Elegushi, the Elegushi of Ikate land.

Eko Hot Blog reports that the defendants, Adeigbagbo Harrison, Prince Toluwoleke Megba, Harrison Soji, Megbalewon Adeniji James, and Segun Ekomale (Ikuomola), are facing eight counts of conspiracy, making false statements, and impersonation.

The prosecution, led by M. Animashaun, informed the court that the defendants, along with others still at large, allegedly conspired to make false statements to a public officer at the Force Criminal Investigation Department in Alagbon, Ikoyi, Lagos.

On the same day, the defendants allegedly made false statements to the police, accusing the Al-Mansour family, Mr. Chinedu Nweke, Chief Ogunyemi John, and Monsunmola Ogunyemi of criminal activity.

Animashaun alleged that the offenses took place on November 30, 2022.

The first defendant, Adeigbagbo Harrison, is accused of falsely presenting himself as the paramount ruler of the Itedo community in Ibeju Lekki between January and February 1, 2023.

It is alleged that Adeigbagbo’s actions incited the community’s youth and members against Oba Elegushi, potentially leading to a breach of public peace.

The charges leveled against the defendants are said to contravene Sections 96(a), 95, 380(1), and 56(1)(a) of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State 2015.

All five defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges, prompting the prosecutor to request a trial date and remand for the defendants at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre.

Defense counsel Ebun Olu-Adegboruwa (SAN) informed the court of a filed bail application for the defendants and requested they remain on the administrative bail previously granted by the police.

The court will consider the bail application and determine the next steps in the proceedings.

He said,”They have been attending court faithfully and in furtherance of the pending application for bail we humbly urge my lord to allow the defendants to continue to enjoy the administrative bail granted to them by the police pending the hearing and determination of the application for bail”.

In her ruling Justice Harrison granted the request of the defence counsel.

She held that the court had observed that all the defendants have been attending court faithfully.

“ The defendants are to continue with the administrative bail granted to them by the police pending the hearing of the bail application,” she said.

The case was adjourned till April 8, 2025.
