Five Potential Replacements to Watch Out for If Senator Natasha’s Recall Process Succeeds

  • Yahaya Bello former Kogi State Governor takes the lead
  • Senator Natasha Akpoti -Uduangha can also replace herself
  • Mahmud Ademu Attah came a distance second in the primary election that produced Senator Natasha Akpoti -Uduangha

Yesterday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has confirmed the receipt of a petition seeking the recall of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents the Kogi Central Senatorial District.

Eko Hot Blog reports that INEC Secretary Rose Oriaran-Anthony received the petition, with the constituents claiming that over 250,000 registered voters in the district, which has 580,000 voters, have signed in support of the recall process.

EDITOR’S PICK

The petitioners cited a loss of confidence in Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan as the reason for their request, following her recent suspension from the Senate for misconduct after a seat row with Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

As the recall process of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan unfolds, it’s important to note that, while no Nigerian senator has ever been successfully recalled, the high number of signatures collected by the petitioners in Kogi Central suggests that the outcome of this case could set a historical precedent.

In the event that the recall process is successful, potential candidates to succeed Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan may emerge from various political parties and backgrounds

1. Yahaya Bello

It is not uncommon for former governors in Nigeria to transition into the Senate, and former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello’s entrance into the race, if Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan is recalled, is a distinct possibility.

Despite the ongoing investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Bello’s political clout and experience as a two-term governor could make him a formidable candidate.

In Nigeria, several politicians have contested for political positions while under EFCC investigation or facing corruption charges.

2. Mahmud Ademu Attah

A well-known political figure from Kogi Central, who was initially considered the frontrunner to secure the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ticket for the senatorial primary election.

However, the unexpected entry of Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan into the PDP, after leaving the Social Democratic Party (SDP), altered the political landscape.

Despite this development, Attah remained a significant contender in the primary election, ultimately coming in second place.

3. Senator Natasha Akpoti

Despite the ongoing recall process, Senator Natasha Akpoti Uduaghan’s political future may still hold promise.

Many people are concerned about the implications of a successful recall, but what some may not realize is that she could potentially run for the same position again and emerge as a strong contender.

Senator Akpoti has demonstrated remarkable strength, courage, and persistence throughout her political career. These qualities have enabled her to overcome obstacles and rise above her peers to become the first female senator from Kogi State.

4. Ahmed Ogembe

Ahmed Ogembe is known for his influence and experience in the region’s political landscape. Having served as a Senator representing Kogi Central Senatorial District in the 8th National Assembly, Ogembe has played a crucial role in shaping the political dynamics of the area.

In the 2023 elections, Ogembe demonstrated his commitment to collaboration and unity within the PDP by joining hands with other leaders to secure victories for PDP candidates in Okene LGA.

With his strong foothold in Okene LGA, Ogembe remains a credible candidate in case Natasha’s recall process scale through.

5. Hajia Ramatu Tasalla Shehu

Hajia Ramatu Tasalla Shehu is an outspoken politician from Kogi Central, known for her strong stance on issues affecting her constituents.

She has been actively involved in political activities and contested as a senatorial aspirant under the APC in the last Kogi Central Senatorial race.

Following the primaries, Shehu vocally rejected the outcome and called for a cancellation of the exercise, labeling it as a “kangaroo election.” Her bold statement emphasized her commitment to ensuring fair and transparent democratic processes.
