NIDCOM Enjoying Transformation Under The Tutelage of Abike Dabiri

As the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) marks its fifth anniversary, it has emerged as a trailblazer in uniting Nigeria with its extensive diaspora network.

Created to harness the talents, resources, and global influence of millions of Nigerians abroad, NiDCOM has transformed diaspora engagement, driving cohesion, fostering investments, and accelerating national development.

Under the visionary stewardship of Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, NiDCOM has consistently delivered impactful results that underscore its purpose.

Through flagship projects like the Nigeria Diaspora Investment Summit (NDIS), the Commission has facilitated significant investments from the diaspora, adding to over $90 billion in remittances sent over the past five years.

By collaborating with the Nigerian Diaspora Summit Initiative (NDSI), NiDCOM has provided a structured platform for diaspora investments in diverse sectors.

The establishment of the National Diaspora Policy 2021 has further catalyzed growth in agriculture, technology, healthcare, and more. The Commission’s initiatives, such as Diaspora Data Mapping and the publication of the Compendium of 600+ Diaspora Champions, highlight its commitment to innovation and excellence.

NiDCOM’s dedication to safeguarding the welfare of Nigerians abroad is evident in its swift and strategic interventions during emergencies.

From rescuing trafficked individuals in Ghana to evacuating citizens from conflict zones like Libya, Sudan, Ukraine, Saudi Arabia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, and South Africa, the Commission has demonstrated empathy and efficiency.

Over the past five years, it has resolved over 1,000 petitions, addressing critical concerns of Nigerians living overseas.

The Commission also plays a key role in celebrating Nigeria’s cultural and academic legacy. Landmark events such as the Badagry Door of Return Festival and the production of the Nigerian Grand Book: MAGNUM OPUS reflect its dedication to preserving heritage and fostering intellectual growth.

Forward-looking initiatives like the African Diaspora Research Centre of Excellence at the University of Ibadan and the Home Strings Programme, which strengthens ties with second and third-generation diaspora Nigerians, showcase NiDCOM’s progressive approach to sustaining global connections. It is worth noting that NiDCOM’s success has attracted delegations from nine countries, including Egypt, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Namibia, Ghana, South Korea, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), eager to replicate its model.

Through its National Diaspora Day celebrations, National Diaspora Merit Awards, and Diaspora Weekly TV programmes, NiDCOM has created platforms to celebrate the accomplishments of Nigerians abroad, fostering national pride.

Its Quarterly Lecture Series and partnerships with ministries, embassies, international organizations, and private entities have expanded its reach, making diaspora engagement more inclusive and impactful.

Given these outstanding achievements, it is clear that Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa’s leadership has been instrumental. Contrary to the assertion by Ambassador Kukah regarding the Kemi Badenoch issue, suggesting NiDCOM should be led by a “career ambassador,” Dabiri-Erewa’s accomplishments speak for themselves. If any title is befitting, it is “Ambassador Plenipotentiary,” reflecting her unparalleled diplomacy, advocacy, and strategic leadership.

Leadership is measured by results, not titles. Dabiri-Erewa has redefined diaspora engagement by forging global alliances, mobilizing resources, and achieving tangible outcomes, setting a benchmark for excellence across Africa. Her efforts exemplify the power of innovative leadership, transforming NiDCOM into a pioneer in diaspora relations worldwide.

As NiDCOM embarks on its next chapter, the foundation laid over the past five years promises even greater achievements ahead. With innovation, determination, and a steadfast commitment to connecting Nigerians across the globe, NiDCOM is poised to scale new heights.

This anniversary is a celebration of the milestones achieved and a toast to the visionary leadership that has brought diaspora engagement into the limelight.
