Eko Hot Blog reports that Nigeria’s women’s U-17 national team, the Flamingos, have been placed in Group A for the 2024 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
The draw takes place in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, on Sunday (Nigeria time).
In Group A, the Flamingos will compete against the host nation Dominican Republic, as well as Ecuador and New Zealand.
Hence, this will be the third recent instance of a Nigerian team being grouped with the host nation.
Following the Falcons being grouped with Australia at the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
And the Super Eagles being grouped with Ivory Coast at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
The Flamingos will begin their campaign against New Zealand on Wednesday, October 16.
However, they will then face Ecuador on Saturday, October 19, and wrap up the group stage with a match against the Dominican Republic on Tuesday, October 22.
Under the leadership of Bankole Olowookere, Nigeria aims to build on their impressive third-place finish in the previous tournament held in India.
The draw, featuring 16 nations, took place at the Frey Antón de Montecinos monument.
However, this marks the final 16-team edition before the tournament expands to 24 teams in 2025.
Journalist and football commentator Avelino Cuadra presented the draw and hosted by FIFA Director of Tournaments Jaime Yarza.
Moreso, Dominican athlete Thais Herrera and Canadian-born Mexican player Tatiana Flores assisted them.
Herrera is the first Dominican woman to climb Mount Everest.
While Flores represented Mexico at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in India in 2022.
This tournament marks the Dominican Republic’s debut in a FIFA women’s competition, highlighting the country’s growing football scene.
Hence, their men’s Olympic squad is set to compete in Paris 2024, who participate in the FIFA U-20 World Cup last year,
The other groups for the tournament are: Group B with Spain, the USA, Korea Republic, and Colombia; Group C with Korea DPR, Mexico, Kenya, and England; and Group D featuring Japan, Poland, Brazil, and Zambia.
Meanwhile, tickets for the tournament, scheduled from October 16 to November 3, will go on sale on August 27.
