Maiduguri Flood: Reps Reject ₦300bn Relief For Borno
The House of Representatives rejected a proposal for a ₦300bn relief fund from the Federal Government to aid the flood-stricken Borno State, where over 30 people died and key institutions, including the Maiduguri University Teaching Hospital, were severely damaged.
During Wednesday’s plenary, lawmaker Amos Magaji emphasized the dire conditions, highlighting that the renowned Cancer Centre at the hospital was submerged, damaging critical equipment and records, while electricity infrastructure collapsed, raising the risk of disease outbreaks.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that in response, Inuwa Garba proposed a ₦300bn grant to assist flood victims, but the amendment was rejected by lawmakers, who argued that significant donations, including ₦17bn from various sources, had already been made.
While the House refused to specify the ₦300bn, it urged the Federal Government to provide support for the victims and address damages to public facilities, including the Shehu of Borno Palace and the Maiduguri Correctional Centre. Several House committees were mandated to ensure compliance with restoration efforts.
The Borno State government had received at least N17bn in monetary donations and pledges, including from the Federal Government, which gave the state N3bn.
Following the adoption of the motion, the House urged the Federal Government to address the needs of the Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, renovate the Shehu of Borno Palace, the Maiduguri Correctional Centre and other health facilities affected by the flood.
It mandated its committees on Health Institutions, Power, Renewable Energy, Insurance and Actuaries Matters, and Legislative Compliance to ensure strict compliance.
