Nigerian Govt Alerts Citizens To Flood Risks Along Niger, Benue Rivers

The Federal Government has called on Nigerians to be prepared for more flooding along the Niger and Benue rivers and other parts of the country after a severe flood in Maiduguri, Borno State.

Speaking to the media in Abuja, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev said that the release of water right in the southern part of Nigeria is anticipated.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that he urged for more continuation of flood control measures to be taken especially in the areas that were highlighted in the annual flood outlook for the year 2024.

According to Utsev, floods in the two areas; Maiduguri and Jere, were occasioned by over flooding of Alau Dam, which received water inflow from the Ngadda River.

He also pointed out that Borno, Bauchi, Jigawa, Yobe, Benue, and other states were pointed out as the flood-prone states.

To this effect, the minister was accompanied by a team of professionals who toured the stricken regions of the country to evaluate the level of loss and advise on the best ways of rebuilding the affected regions. Speaking to Utsev also indicated that the floods posed danger in water pollution, hence posing a big threat to the people through waterborne diseases.

As water rose in the rivers, Utsev called on people to be cautious, that there is a red alert on the Niger and Benue rivers.
