The government of Minnesota state has apprehended former police officer, Derek Chauvin, and charged him with third-degree murder over May 25 death of George Floyd.

John Harrington, commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, announced this on Friday.

Chauvin was found dismissed from the police this week after he was found culpable of premeditated murder.

Chauvin in a viral video, pinned Floyd to the ground with his knee on the Black man’s neck until the 46-year-old passed away.

The killing has sparked days of violent protest that reached a crescendo on Thursday night, after the county prosecutor declared that he did not have substantial proof to support a criminal charge.

Police had initially claimed that Floyd had resisted arrest and then suffered a medical event, but those claims were refuted by video evidence.

Another video showed Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck as the man begged for his life, saying he could not breath with his posture, and bystanders told the officer that he was bleeding from the nose.
