EKO HOT BLOG reports that using it for certain items can result in uneven heating, altered textures, or even health risks. Here are five foods you should avoid putting in the microwave:
1. Frozen Meat
While the microwave’s “defrost” setting might seem handy, attempting to cook frozen meat fully in it can lead to tough, dry, and unevenly cooked portions. Microwaves heat from the outside in, leaving the outer layers overcooked before the inside is properly heated. It’s better to thaw meat overnight in the refrigerator or use the microwave for a quick defrost before finishing in an oven, skillet, or grill.
2. Chili Peppers
Heating chili peppers in the microwave can release capsaicin, the spicy compound in them, into the air. Once the microwave is opened, these fumes can irritate your eyes and throat. To avoid discomfort, heat chili peppers on the stove where you can control the intensity of the fumes.
3. Frozen Fruits
Microwaving frozen fruits can alter their texture and flavor, turning them mushy. Additionally, the process can diminish their nutrient content. Instead, let fruits like strawberries and blueberries thaw naturally at room temperature or in the fridge.
4. Hard-Boiled Eggs
Microwaving hard-boiled eggs, especially with the shell intact, can cause pressure to build up inside, resulting in an explosive mess. Even without the shell, they can still pop unexpectedly. To warm them, use gentle heating on the stove or enjoy them cold.
5. Breast Milk
Heating breast milk in a microwave can create dangerous hot spots that might burn your baby’s mouth. It may also reduce essential nutrients in the milk. A safer alternative is warming the bottle in a bowl of warm water or using a bottle warmer.
By avoiding these foods in the microwave, you can ensure safety, better textures, and preserved nutrients.
