Morales’s Movement for Socialism (MAS) party released a statement blaming the incident on men in black who allegedly shot at the vehicle as it passed a military barracks. The MAS party attributed responsibility to the administration of current President Luis Arce.
President Arce, who also belongs to the MAS party but has become a rival, condemned political violence and called for a thorough investigation into the incident. Tensions between the two men have intensified since both declared their candidacies for the MAS nomination in the 2025 presidential election.
According to Morales, the shooting took place near the Bolivian Army’s Ninth Division base close to Villa Tunari. He described the attack as a “joint operation between military and police forces,” claiming that one bullet narrowly missed him while the driver of the vehicle sustained injuries. Morales’s faction within MAS alleged that those responsible for the attack took refuge in the military barracks before being evacuated by helicopter, describing the government as “fascist.”
Morales, who led Bolivia from 2006 to 2019, faces various legal issues, including accusations of statutory rape and human trafficking, which he denies. His supporters have staged blockades and clashed with police in recent weeks, protesting what Morales describes as a right-wing vendetta against him dating back to his resignation in 2019 amid vote-rigging accusations.
