“It is with great sorrow that Sao Paulo FC announce the death of Jose Carlos de Almeida, Ze Carlos, this Friday in Osasco, near Sao Paulo,” said a statement from the club where he played from 1997 to 1999.
Ze Carlos entered Brazil’s 1998 World Cup squad untested at the international level, chosen to replace Flavio Conceicao.
During the tournament, he remained on the bench through the group stage and the knockout rounds against Chile in the round of 16 and Denmark in the quarter-finals.
His single cap for Brazil came in the semi-final against the Netherlands, stepping in for Cafu, who was suspended.

Brazil triumphed on penalties in that match, allowing Ze Carlos to play a vital, albeit brief, role in the team’s journey.
However, he returned to the bench for the final, where Brazil fell 3-0 to Zinedine Zidane’s France, and was not called up to represent Brazil again. Ze Carlos eventually retired from professional football in 2005.
