Former Confederation of African Football (CAF) President Issa Hayatou has passed away. He died on Thursday after a prolonged illness, just one day before his 78th birthday.
Hayatou led CAF for 29 years, from 1988 to 2017, and briefly served as acting FIFA President from 2015 to 2016 following Sepp Blatter’s suspension.
In 2011, Hayatou faced sanctions from the International Olympic Committee over his involvement in an alleged bribery scandal at FIFA, where he was accused of accepting $20,000 from the sports marketing company ISL in 1995.
