Former CBN Governor Emefiele Remanded In EFCC Custody Amid New Corruption Charges

Eko Hot Blog reports that, in a stunning development, the Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja has ordered the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele, to be remanded in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

This comes after Emefiele was arraigned on 23 counts of “abuse of office, accepting gratifications, corrupt demand, receiving property fraudulently obtained, and conferring corrupt advantage.”
As quoted in the source, “the EFCC alleged that abused his office while he was CBN Governor through allegation allocations of $4.5bn and N2.8bn.” Emefiele pleaded not guilty to the charges, along with his co-defendant, Henry Isioma-Omoile.
The court also ordered that Isioma-Omoile be remanded at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre. The matter was adjourned to April 11 for the hearing of the defendants’ bail applications and the commencement of the trial.

This development marks the fourth criminal case filed against Emefiele by the Federal Government following his removal from office last June by President Bola Tinubu. The former CBN governor is expected to face yet another arraignment between April 25 and 26 in Abuja.
