Mutiu Akinbami, the former councillor of Abeokuta North Local Government Area in Ogun State, also known as Igor, has been shot dead.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that Akinbami was killed on Friday night by gunmen while riding a motorcycle with his daughter in Abeokuta, the state capital. The incident occurred around 6:13 p.m., between the Brewery Bus Stop and Olomoore Junction.

Eyewitnesses who spoke with Vanguard revealed that the assailants were traveling in a tinted Toyota Hilux. Members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) also confirmed that Akinbami’s attackers had trailed him from his residence near Olomoore Federal Housing Estate. After carrying out the attack, the gunmen quickly fled the scene, making a detour at the Brewery area.

Akinbami’s death has sparked widespread discussions among residents in the Brewery and Olomoore Junction areas.

In a separate incident, a 32-year-old man, Onyiuke Nwedeogu, has died after setting himself and his house on fire in Ndiechi Igbeagu, Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

According to sources, the tragic event unfolded after an argument between Onyiuke and his wife, Felicia Nwedeogu, on Sunday morning. Following the altercation, Onyiuke reportedly assaulted his wife before going to the family’s provision shop, where he set the shop—and himself—on fire.

He was later rushed to the Alex Ekwueme Federal Teaching Hospital (AE-FETHA) but succumbed to injuries related to the fire on Wednesday.

Sources revealed that the couple had been experiencing ongoing marital issues, despite attempts from both families to intervene. Prior to the self-immolation, Onyiuke allegedly removed the window protectors from the house where his wife and their three daughters were sleeping, dousing it with fuel and setting it ablaze. Thankfully, neighbors intervened and rescued the family members before the fire could spread further.

Believing he had succeeded in harming his family, Onyiuke then drove to their shop, where he set himself on fire.

The Ebonyi State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed that the police had not yet received an official report on the incident at the time of this report.
