Johnson, and a man and a woman were all rushed to hospital suffering ‘serious injuries’.
He played 12 times for Bolton Wanderers in the Premier League over the course of three seasons.
The shooting happened shortly after polls closed during the 2020 Jamaican general election.
According to the Jamaica Observer, Johnson, 40, received two shots to his back and abdomen.
All three of those wounded are believed to be in a serious but stable condition.
Police at the scene claimed the drive-by attack was probably linked to an ongoing feud in the area.
Witnesses claimed a car drove up to the group and opened fire.
